Graduate Student in Microbiome Research (MSc in Health Sciences), 

Carleton University, Ottawa, ON

 

We are looking for a highly motivated graduate student (MSc) to participate in our ongoing collaborative research project with Saint Vincent Hospital (Ottawa) to investigate the microbiome of chronic wounds and how it drives inflammation in the chronic wound microenvironment. In this project, the graduate student will learn a variety of microbiome (16S rDNA amplicon, metagenome), immunology, and microscopy approaches to examine how bacterial biofilms drive inflammation in the chronic wound microenvironment. Students should be prepared to spend some time at Saint Vincent Hospital to help with sample collection.   

 

This collaborative research project will be co-supervised by Dr. Joerg Overhage (Molecular Microbiology and Infectious Disease Lab) and Dr. Edana Cassol (Systems Immunology Lab) in the Department of Health Sciences at Carleton University. Carleton’s MSc in Health Sciences is a research-based thesis program that provides advanced disciplinary and interdisciplinary education in health sciences. Basic Requirement

Candidates must hold a Bachelor of Science degree in a relevant field (e.g. Microbiology & Immunology, Life Science or Health Science) from a recognized institution with a minimum of A- (80%) average overall. We are looking for a friendly, organized team player with interest in interdisciplinary research, who is highly self-motivated, able to work independently, and has excellent written and oral communication skills. Strong problem-solving skills are also highly desired. Any of the following laboratory skills would be beneficial: experience in microbiology, immunology, microscopy, molecular biology, bioinformatics, or R programming.
